:: Biography

Laurent "Slick" Cohen is a multi-genre musician, producer and audio engineer based in Los Angeles, with credits including Lil’ Wayne, Nelly, and Birdman.

The Paris, France native developed an affinity for music at a very young age, and he received classical training on several different instruments before eventually focusing his energy and talents into the guitar. After Laurent relocated with his family to Miami in the late 1980s, he eventually received his first big break when he was selected to become the bass player for Island Records pop alternative singer Arlan. Laurent recorded several songs for Arlan's second album, granting him the valuable opportunity of collaborating in the studio with highly acclaimed artist Joe Galdo of Miami Sound Machine, and legendary producer Tom Dowd.

Over the last few years, Laurent has enjoyed continued success, most recently producing the Nelly song “Giving Her the Grind” ft. Sean Paul on the album 5.0. Other recent productions include two songs on Lil Wayne’s rock influenced album Rebirth, Birdman’s “Southside” ft. Lil Wayne (released as an iTunes single, and later remixed for the album Priceless), the Plies hit “Family Straight” on Da Realist (a heartfelt song for which the artist produced an official video), and co-produced several tracks with Grammy winning producer Infamous, including “Kobe Bryant”, Lil Wayne’s tribute to the Lakers player for the 2009 NBA playoffs, Fat Joe’s “Kilo” ft. Clipse and Cam’ron, and “Don’t Go”, a four-to-the-floor pop rocker for Flo Rida’s upcoming album Only One Rida (Part 2).

Laurent is also an accomplished product designer. He has designed and developed several products for companies including Native Instruments and Stanton, where he led the Final Scratch development team. Final Scratch, commercially released in 2001, was the first DJ interface vinyl and CD control of digital audio files on a computer, paving the way for today’s systems like Serato Scratch Live and NI’s Traktor Skratch.

In late 2008, Laurent founded Mixware (www.mixware.net), a boutique distribution company dedicated to importing high quality DJ and audio gear. Today, Mixware is the exclusive US distributor of several European brands including UDG, Reloop, and Decksaver. He also recently acquired the Electrix (www.electrixpro.com) brand and trademark under the Mixware umbrella. Electrix is reknown for the Repeater, the first multi-channel looping sampler with automatic synchronization.

With a music production career on the rise, Mixware, and the recent Electrix acquisition, you could say the future is bright for Laurent.
